Toby you are so right. I am often pessimistic about large corporation's ability to attract the skill to really make innovation work. There are a few people who can pull it off in a corporate setting, but they are rare -- like Gordon.

Definitely clever stuff. Echoing some of the thinking in your piece there is often an odd mix of the staid and old embedded with the exciting and innovative in the start up world. Several years ago parts of my team and I were lucky enough to help work on a book called Blueprint to a Billion whose author analyzed a ton of data about start ups and how they succeded or failed. Interestingly there was a pretty strong pattern around 8 common factors. Included in there were some smart basics like having enough cash flow to fund vibrant R&D or having intense engineering talent to ensure quality product delivered well and fast. As large companies embrace innovatoon more and more there is a serious risk that the 'basics' get subjugated to the hot , sexy, start-up innovation 'stuff'. You have to manage both well to win.
